A week after hosting our “Brian Shaffer” event at BrewDog we sit down and discuss the event, some of the Brian Shaffer theories and questions discussed at the event, our panelists, and of course all of the amazing folks who attended the event to help an Ohio charity - The Porchlight Project.

Ohio State Medical Student, Brian Randall Shaffer disappeared without an apparent reason on April 1, 2006.  His last known whereabouts was a second-floor campus area bar where he was having drinks with friends. Near the entrance of the Ugly Tuna Saloona just before 2 a.m. Brian is seen on security footage talking briefly with two women. Brian later became separated from his friends who have stated that they assumed that Brian had left and gone home. At the time of his disappearance Brian Shaffer was 6’2” tall and approximately 160 to 165 lbs. He’s a caucasian male with brown hair and hazel eyes. Brian had a Pearl Jam tattoo on his upper right arm and he plays guitar. If you have any information regarding Brian’s disappearance or his whereabouts please contact Detective Edwards with the Columbus Police Department @ 614-645-4624 or  aedwards@columbuspolice.org

Following a multi-agency task force investigation, Rex Heuermann was arrested on July 13, 2023 in connection with a murder in a string a of murders often refer to as “The Gilgo Four.” Eventually, he would be charged by the state of New York for killing seven women. For over two years he denied any involvement in the murders, claiming that he was innocent of the charges. This month in front of a judge and a packed courthouse the 62-year-old Long Island architect confessed to killing eight women. One more than what he was charged.

Missing Paperboys /// Chapter 6 /// The Lost Boys

In the early eighties middle America experienced tragedies that no parent could imagine. Newspaper boys were disappearing. They would step out into the dark of the early morning hours to deliver the daily news to their neighborhoods and some of them did not return. It started in Iowa and then moved to Nebraska. Kids were plucked off the street just a few steps into their routes and some have vanished forever. Johnny Gosch went missing from Des Moines, Iowa in September of 1982. In August of 1984, 13 year old Eugene Martin disappeared during his early morning Des Moines Register paper route. After Eugene vanished the Anderson Erickson Dairy company began printing black and white photos and bios on the sides of Milk Cartons distributed across the state of Iowa. In March of 1986 Marc Allen became the third boy to vanish from the streets of Des Moines.

Chapter 5 - A Need to Kill

In the eighties in middle America paperboys were disappearing. It started in Iowa and then moved to Nebraska. Kids were plucked off of the street and some have vanished forever. The first boy gone was Johnny Gosch. The second was Danny Joe Eberle. The third boy didn’t have a paper route at all. Christopher Walden was abducted near his home while walking to school, on December 2, 1983. John Joubert confessed to and later was convicted of murdering Danny Joe Eberle and Christopher Walden. Even with a confession Joubert was a man with many secrets. Some he told to investigative reporter Mark Pettit. Mark Pettit is the author of “A Need to Kill,” and he was kind enough to join us in the Garage for a discussion about abduction, murder, and what goes on in the mind of a serial killer.

A NEED TO KILL: The life and crimes of John Joubert, Nebraska’s most notorious serial child killer by Mark Pettit is available on Amazon.
