On the morning of February 15, 2012, Anna Cardwell's mother left home briefly to run errands while Anna slept in. When she returned about an hour later, she found blood throughout the home and discovered her daughter dead in the kitchen. Anna had been shot four times with a 9mm handgun after desperately trying to escape her attacker. There were no signs of forced entry, leading investigators to believe she had willingly opened the door for someone she knew.
